Iets meer dan een paar jaar na de release van de laatste film in de franchise is onthuld dat The Matrix 5 in de maak is bij Warner Bros. Volgens The Hollywood Reporter wordt de nieuwe Matrix-film geregisseerd door Drew Goddard, wiens eerdere werken onder meer The Cabin in the Woods en Bad Times at the El Royale zijn. Dit is de eerste The Matrix-film waarbij de makers Lana en Lilly Wachowski niet rechtstreeks betrokken zijn, hoewel Lana de komende film wel zal produceren.

Er is op dit moment weinig bekend over de plot, hoewel het blijkbaar “een nieuwe kijk zal zijn om de franchise uit te breiden.”
Warner Bros. Motion Pictures president of production Jesse Ehrman zei in een statement:
“Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25-years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters. The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”
Goddard zei in een statement:
“It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.”
The Matrix Resurrections was de meest recente film in de serie, uitgebracht in december 2021. De film werd geregisseerd door Lana Wachowski op basis van een scenario dat ze samen met Aleksander Hemon en David Mitchell schreef. Het vierde deel bevatte de terugkeer van Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss en Jada Pinkett Smith, waarin ze hun iconische rollen als Neo, Trinity en Niobe opnieuw vertolkten. Lambert Wilson en Daniel Bernhardt hernamen ook hun respectievelijke rollen van The Merovingian en Agent Johnson. Ze werden vergezeld door franchise-nieuwkomers Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Christina Ricci, Telma Hopkins, Eréndira Ibarra, Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt en Brian J. Smith.
