Sunrise on the Reaping, de onlangs aangekondigde The Hunger Games prequelroman van Suzanne Collins, wordt omgezet tot een film.
Eerder werd aangekondigd dat Collins werkt aan een nieuwe prequel-roman, die gepubliceerd wordt op 18 maart 2025 en speelt zich af tijdens de Second Quarter Quell, de games waar Haymitch Abernathy deel van uitmaakte. Lionsgate heeft nu aangekondigd dat de roman van Collins zal worden geadapteerd tot een speelfilm die op 20 november 2026 in de Amerikaanse bioscopen zal worden uitgebracht. Collins zei:
“With Sunrise on the Reaping, I was inspired by David Hume’s idea of implicit submission and, in his words, ‘the easiness with which the many are governed by the few. The story also lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. The question ‘Real or not real?’ seems more pressing to me every day.”
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping wordt geproduceerd door Nina Jacobson en Brad Simpson onder hun Color Force Banner. Lionsgate Motion Picture Group’s Adam Fogelson vertelde:
“Suzanne Collins is a master storyteller and our creative north star. We couldn’t be more fortunate than to be guided and trusted by a collaborator whose talent and imagination are so consistently brilliant. We know Hunger Games fans worldwide will be spellbound by where Suzanne has focused this next extraordinary story. The Second Quarter Quell is legendary and looms large over the history of the Games, even into the time of Katniss Everdeen a quarter-century later. Like fans around the globe, we are eagerly anticipating this exciting return to Panem.”

Panem, vierentwintig jaar vóór de gebeurtenissen van The Hunger Games, beginnend op de ochtend van de oogst van de Vijftigste Hongerspelen, ook wel bekend als de Second Quarter Quell.
Francis Lawrence – die een aantal eerdere films in de franchise heeft geregisseerd, waaronder The Hunger Games: Catching Fire uit 2013, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Deel 1 uit 2014, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Deel 2 uit 2015 en The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes – is in gesprek om de film te regisseren.
Er is nog geen castinginformatie bekendgemaakt, wat betekent dat het onduidelijk is of Woody Harrelson, die Haymitch speelde in eerdere Hunger Games-films, zijn rol opnieuw zal vertolken.
