Sony Pictures Entertainment neemt de fysieke mediaactiviteiten van Disney over. Variety meldt dat Disney en Sony Pictures Entertainment een deal hebben gesloten waarbij laatstgenoemde bedrijf de productie, distributie en marketing van Disney’s dvd’s, Blu-ray-schijven en andere fysieke media-releases overneemt. Variety schrijft:
“As part of the deal, Sony will market, sell and distribute all Disney’s new releases and catalog titles on physical media to consumers through retailers and distributors in the U.S. and Canada.”

Disney zal zijn digitale media blijven bezitten en controleren, waaronder streaming-releases op Disney Plus en premium video-on-demand. Hoewel het momenteel niet bekend is of de deal tussen Sony en Disney tot ontslagen zal leiden, merkt Variety ook op:
“[Disney] is expected to conduct an internal assessment across all business functions that support physical entertainment amid the transition to Sony, according to sources familiar with the licensing agreement. According to Disney, the licensing model allows the studio to continue to offer films and TV shows through physical retailers and to respond to consumer demand more efficiently. The company said the shift is consistent with strategies it’s implemented companywide, as well as transitions in other markets.”
The Digital Bits rapporteerde voor het eerst het nieuws over de deal tussen Disney en Sony. Volgens de website betekent de overeenkomst tussen de twee studio’s dat de Disney Movie Club – een abonnementsdienst die gebruikers verschillende fysieke media-gerelateerde aanbiedingen biedt – wordt gesloten.
“We’ve enjoyed serving you for the last 23 years, but consumer behavior and viewing preferences continue to evolve, so we have made the tough decision to close Disney Movie Club.”
Volgens The Wrap hebben klanten van Disney Movie Club tot 20 mei 2024 de tijd om bestellingen te plaatsen voordat de dienst officieel wordt stopgezet op 20 juli 2024.
